Dr. Sharon E. (Hutson) Cheston

Dr. Sharon Cheston is a full professor in the Pastoral Counseling Department at Loyola University Maryland. Her 30+ years of experience as an educator, supervisor, mental health counselor, and author has lead to her attaining an expertise in trauma, the integration of spirituality in counseling, and counselor education and supervision.

Sharon distinguished herself as a leader in the counseling field both at the state and national levels serving in leadership roles in the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC) and with her gubernatorial appointment to the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists where she served as chair, spearheading the process of obtaining licensure for professional counselors in Maryland. The American Counseling Association recognized her contribution to the field with the Carl D. Perkins award for Government Relations in 2004.

Faded Rainbows (Available on Amazon.com), her most recent book, is a novel that explores the world of psychotherapy through a counselor and her three clients. The journey is a mysterious revelation of clients’ sacred chronicles and erroneous life assumptions.

Faded Rainbows: Psychospiritual Therapeutic Journeys. (2008). iUniverse, Inc. New York.

ISBN# 0-8091-3420-9

Text Box: The journey of psychotherapy is a mysterious revelation of a client’s sacred chronicles and erroneous assumptions about life. Faded Rainbows allows the reader to experience the psychotherapeutic journeys of three clients, Caz, Noelle, and Bally. The difficult work of revealing their traumas and struggles creates unexpected twists, resistance, and surprising discoveries.

Lisa’s voyage of healing after her daughter’s death impacts her work resulting in her seeking consultation from her fellow therapists. Her personal and spiritual revelations and healing allows the reader to understand her as a person, not just a therapist. Modeling her own journey of healing, she gently but tenaciously asks her clients to consider alternative ways of living.

LIMITED PRIVATE PRACTICE

My private practice consists primarily of adult clients who are seeking to improve their mental health and their daily functioning. I have over 30 years of experience in the mental health field.  Through my degrees and continuing education training I have developed skills in treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, personality disorders, and trauma.

My primary theoretical orientation is Adlerian. I chose this theory because it blends a humanistic way of being with clients, with a psychodynamic way of understanding clients’ issues, and a cognitive/behavioral way of intervening with clients. All in all I find the Adlerian theory the most comprehensive counseling theory and I have taught 3-credit graduate-level courses on this approach.
